Gemstone Grass Fed Beef

Pasture Perfect. Performance Proven.

We partnered with Gemstone Grass Fed Beef to redesign and rebuild their Shopify store on a fully custom Shopify 2.0 theme. Gemstone is a fourth-generation family farm in Gem, Alberta, selling grass-fed, grass-finished beef direct to consumers across the province, as well as through their butcher shop and kitchen at Calgary Farmers’ Market West. The rebuild gave the business a design system that reflects the quality of the product, a subscription buying experience for repeat customers, SparkLayer-powered wholesale functionality for trade accounts, regional shipping logic via ShipperHQ, and a properly structured home for their tallow balm product line alongside the core beef offering.

The Brand

Gemstone Grassfed Beef is a fourth generation family farm in Gem, Alberta. Built on regenerative farming practices and a commitment to transparency, the brand serves customers who care about where their food comes from, how animals are raised, and what goes into the products they bring home. That same philosophy carries through to their tallow balm line, which is sourced from the same cattle and crafted for the same audience.

The website needed to tell that story clearly and authentically. It had to balance farm heritage, product education, and ecommerce performance while supporting a product range broad enough to serve both first time shoppers and loyal subscribers in a single visit.

The Challenge

Looking to enhance their online presence, ERIK’S Bike Board & Ski requested prioritized intuitive navigation, greater flexibility in account management, and more effective product comparison tools, all within a sleek, minimalist design optimized for both desktop and mobile users.

  1. Challenging In-Store Pickup Experience
Customers encountered challenges when opting for in-store pickup, as they had to choose a store location before seeing which products were in stock, making the experience more confusing and time-consuming than needed.
  2. Inefficient Order Fulfillment
In the absence of an automated system, order assignments to fulfillment centers were handled manually, often leading to inefficient inventory allocation and shipment delays.
  3. Missing Product Comparison Feature
Users have encountered challenges in efficiently comparing product specifications, resulting in a more complex and time consuming decision making experience, particularly for high-investment products like bicycles. This highlights the need for clearer comparison tools within the user interface.

The Digital Gear That Drives Erik’s

Curbside Convenience,
API Powered

Challenge

The previous website required improvements in presenting delivery and pickup options clearly.

Solution

We integrated a store pickup selector using Shopify’s Local Pickup and Delivery API to streamline the customer checkout experience.

Benefit

Enables users to select between shipping or local store pickup, with live inventory visibility ensuring accurate availability at each location.

Results

The introduction of flexible fulfillment methods resulted in a measurable increase in store visits and a notable improvement in user satisfaction.

Order Routing API

Challenge

The original website offered a store pickup feature, yet the process lacked clarity and ease. Users were prompted to choose a store location before viewing available products or inventory, adding an unnecessary step that disrupted the shopping experience. Without upfront visibility into product availability by location, customers became discouraged, resulting in confusion, drop-offs, and abandoned carts.

Solution

We integrated Shopify’s Order Routing Location Rule Function API, which automates the process of determining the best fulfillment location for each order. For store pickups, the system now dynamically suggests the closest or most convenient store after the customer selects their product, streamlining the flow and eliminating unnecessary steps.

Benefit

Seamless In Store Pick Up: By removing the requirement to select a store before browsing, the redesigned experience allows customers to view product availability immediately, simplifying the shopping process.
Optimized For User Efficiency: By automatically assigning orders to the most appropriate store, the API streamlines fulfillment and removes the manual step of choosing a pickup location.
Expedited checkout process: A simplified purchase flow enables faster transactions, directly contributing to improved conversion performance.

Results

Revamping the store pickup process significantly improved the user experience at ERIK’S Bike Board & Ski. The new, automated store selection removed friction from the purchasing flow, allowing customers to complete their orders easily and with confidence. This simplification not only increased satisfaction and reduced cart abandonment, it also encouraged more foot traffic to retail locations—ultimately supporting stronger in-store engagement and contributing to overall sales growth.

Smart Search with Location Awareness

Challenge

With physical stores and region-specific inventory, ERIK’S Bike Board & Ski needed a search and product discovery experience that dynamically responds to each user’s location.

Solution

We developed a context-aware location selector that integrates geolocation and manual input to identify the user’s nearest bike store. Based on the selected location, the system dynamically filters product availability and catalog listings, and conditionally renders services like in-store pickup, demo ride scheduling, and service appointments.

Benefit

By integrating location context into the search experience, we ensured that product availability, variant data, fulfillment methods, and delivery estimates were dynamically updated based on the user’s selected store.
Real-time location selection updated everything from product options to pickup and delivery timelines, removing friction and accelerating the path to purchase.

Results

After implementing location-aware search, ERIK’S saw an 18% reduction in time to product discovery. Localized callouts like “Available Today at Bloomington Store” drove higher click-through rates, while improved stock-location accuracy led to fewer cart abandonments.

Bike & Gear Comparison Made Easy

Challenge

The previous site did not offer a comparison feature, making it difficult for users to evaluate and choose between similar products.

Solution

We developed a comprehensive product comparison feature.

Benefit

Users can now compare up to three products side-by-side, reviewing specs, prices, and features.

Results

Enhanced decision-making led to a 15% increase in conversions for high-ticket items.

Website Redesign

The homepage design prioritizes user engagement by surfacing seasonal promotions, featured products, and popular categories in a visually prominent way. This intentional layout guides user behavior, making it easier to discover key content and interact with the site early in the session.

Business Impact:

Upfront promotion placement boosts user interaction with deals early in the session, contributing to stronger conversion performance.
