Gemstone Grass Fed Beef

Pasture Perfect. Performance Proven.

We partnered with Gemstone Grass Fed Beef to redesign and rebuild their Shopify store on a fully custom Shopify 2.0 theme. Gemstone is a fourth-generation family farm in Gem, Alberta, selling grass-fed, grass-finished beef direct to consumers across the province, as well as through their butcher shop and kitchen at Calgary Farmers’ Market West. The rebuild gave the business a design system that reflects the quality of the product, a subscription buying experience for repeat customers, SparkLayer-powered wholesale functionality for trade accounts, regional shipping logic via ShipperHQ, and a properly structured home for their tallow balm product line alongside the core beef offering.

About the Project

The project centered on rebuilding Gemstone Grassfed Beef’s Shopify storefront to better support a growing and increasingly complex business. Alongside a fully custom theme, the scope included subscription purchasing, wholesale functionality, regional shipping configuration, and improved merchandising across both beef and tallow balm product lines. The result is a more flexible ecommerce platform designed to scale with the business.

The Brand

Gemstone Grassfed Beef is a fourth generation family farm in Gem, Alberta. Built on regenerative farming practices and a commitment to transparency, the brand serves customers who care about where their food comes from, how animals are raised, and what goes into the products they bring home. That same philosophy carries through to their tallow balm line, which is sourced from the same cattle and crafted for the same audience.

The website needed to tell that story clearly and authentically. It had to balance farm heritage, product education, and ecommerce performance while supporting a product range broad enough to serve both first time shoppers and loyal subscribers in a single visit.

The Challenge

Gemstone Grassfed Beef had outgrown its existing Shopify store. As the business expanded across Alberta, the site struggled to support a growing product catalog, recurring purchases, wholesale customers, and the logistics of delivering perishable products. The challenge was not just creating a better looking storefront, but building the infrastructure needed to support how the business actually operates.

  1. A Theme That No Longer Fit the Brand
The existing storefront lacked the flexibility and visual polish needed to reflect the quality of the products or support ongoing growth without significant redevelopment.
  2. No Subscription Experience for Repeat Buyers
Customers purchasing beef boxes on a regular basis had no way to set up recurring orders, creating unnecessary friction and limiting opportunities for predictable recurring revenue.
  3. Wholesale Buyers Using a Retail Storefront
Trade customers required account specific pricing and a more efficient ordering experience, but the existing store offered no dedicated wholesale functionality.
  4. Regional Shipping Complexity
Shipping fresh and frozen products across Alberta required different delivery options, carriers, and service areas. Without location based shipping rules, fulfillment risked becoming increasingly difficult to manage.
  5. Multiple Product Categories, One Store
The addition of the tallow balm line introduced a new customer journey that needed to be merchandised and presented differently, while still feeling connected to the broader Gemstone brand.

Not Raised on Templates

Custom Shopify 2.0 Theme

Challenge

The existing theme was a constraint rather than an asset. It could not be meaningfully extended to support subscriptions, wholesale, or the visual direction the brand needed, and trying to patch it further would have created more problems than it solved.

Solution

We built a custom theme on Shopify 2.0 using Dawn as the foundation, with a full component system designed around Gemstone’s brand. Farm photography, typography, layout structure, and collection architecture were all built to reflect the quality and story behind the product, not just to display it.

Benefit

Gemstone now has a theme built around their brand and product range that they can extend as the business grows, without being constrained by a generic template.

Farm to Freezer, On Repeat

Challenge

Many of Gemstone’s customers purchase beef boxes on a regular basis, but there was no convenient way to turn those repeat purchases into an ongoing relationship. Customers had to manually reorder each time they needed to restock, creating unnecessary friction and making it harder for the business to capture predictable recurring revenue.

Solution

We integrated Shopify’s native subscription functionality directly into the storefront, allowing customers to choose a recurring delivery schedule from the product page. The subscription experience was fully incorporated into the custom theme, creating a seamless purchasing flow that feels like a natural part of the site while avoiding the added complexity and cost of a third party subscription platform.

Benefit

Customers can now set up recurring deliveries in just a few clicks, making it easier to keep their freezer stocked without the hassle of reordering. For Gemstone, subscriptions create a more predictable revenue stream, strengthen customer retention, and deepen relationships with their most loyal buyers.

The Wholesale Side of the Fence

Challenge

Wholesale buyers need a different purchasing experience than retail customers. They expect account level pricing, the ability to place larger orders efficiently, and a buying flow that does not require them to go through a standard retail checkout. Managing wholesale through the retail storefront was not sustainable as the trade side of the business grew.

Solution

We integrated SparkLayer to create a dedicated wholesale portal within Gemstone’s Shopify store. Approved trade customers can log in to access their own buying experience, complete with account level pricing, streamlined ordering tools, and a flow built for larger volume purchases. Everything runs through the same Shopify backend, keeping retail and wholesale operations connected without requiring a second store.

Benefit

Wholesale buyers now have a purpose built portal that makes ordering faster, clearer, and more professional. For Gemstone, the setup centralizes retail and trade management in one Shopify admin, reducing manual pricing work while giving the wholesale side of the business room to grow.

From Pasture to Porch

Challenge

Shipping perishable beef across Alberta requires more than a standard ecommerce setup. Delivery options, service areas, and carrier availability vary by region, making it essential that customers see the right shipping methods at checkout. Without location based logic in place, there was a risk of incorrect shipping options, fulfillment complications, and increased customer support overhead.

Solution

We implemented ShipperHQ to manage Gemstone’s regional shipping requirements, configuring custom rules that dynamically present the appropriate delivery options based on each customer’s location. This ensured the checkout experience accurately reflected the realities of shipping fresh and frozen products across Alberta.

Benefit

Customers are shown accurate shipping options tailored to their location, creating a smoother and more reliable checkout experience. For the Gemstone team, automated shipping rules reduce manual intervention, minimize fulfillment errors, and provide greater confidence that every order can be delivered as promised.

Tallow Balm Collection

Challenge

Gemstone’s tallow balm line is rooted in the same values that define the beef business, sourced from the same cattle and produced with the same commitment to quality and transparency. While closely connected to the farm’s story, the products appealed to a different buying mindset and required their own dedicated experience within the store. Without clear positioning and presentation, the line risked being overlooked within the broader catalog rather than recognized as a distinct and growing part of the brand.

Solution

We built the tallow balm collection into a dedicated section of the store, complete with its own navigation entry point and custom collection page. Designed to align with the broader Gemstone brand, the experience clearly communicates what the products are, where they come from, and why they belong alongside the farm’s beef offerings, helping customers discover and understand the line easily.

Benefit

Customers now have a clear path to the tallow balm products they are looking for, supported by an experience that explains the products and their connection to the farm. Rather than feeling like an add on within the catalog, the line stands as a natural extension of the Gemstone brand, strengthening its credibility and helping drive discovery across both product categories.

The Power of Collaboration

The best ecommerce projects are built around the realities of the business, not just the technology. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Gemstone team to understand how customers shop, how orders are fulfilled, and how the business continues to grow across Alberta.
That collaborative approach helped shape everything from the custom theme and subscription experience to wholesale purchasing and regional shipping logic. By designing around real workflows rather than forcing the business into a predefined solution, we delivered a Shopify store that supports both the customer experience and the day to day operations behind it.

The Conclusion

Gemstone Grassfed Beef launched its new Shopify experience in April 2026 with a storefront that reflects the quality, care, and craftsmanship behind the brand. Every part of the customer journey was designed around how people actually buy, whether they are discovering the farm for the first time, stocking their freezer with recurring beef box deliveries, shopping for tallow balm products, or placing wholesale orders.

More importantly, the business now has the infrastructure to support its next stage of growth. Subscriptions, wholesale purchasing, regional shipping logic, and a flexible custom theme provide a foundation that can evolve alongside the farm. After four generations of raising cattle in Gem, Alberta, Gemstone has a digital platform that tells its story with the same authenticity as the products it produces and is built to support whatever comes next.
